CAVERN BUILDING FOR THE MARGREID VOLUNTARY FIRE DEPARTMENT,
Margreid (BZ)
Embraced by nature
The planned subterranean firehouse was seamlessly integrated into the natural rock formation, eliminating the need for additional surface space. A meticulous assessment and documentation of its intended functions were undertaken, along with a thorough analysis of temperature requirements, leading to a redefinition of the building’s shell. Leveraging dynamic simulations, the “building” design was refined, optimizing both the building envelope’s quality and construction expenses.
As a result of this energy-efficient approach, substantial savings were realized. Construction costs were slashed by 7%, and operating expenses plummeted by a remarkable 67%, all achieved through a significant reduction in heating demands.
